There are two ways to embed a video in Canvas: adding an external tool or adding a page. You can find both in Canvas Modules, and the process begins similarly.

Getting Started

  1. In the Google Chrome browser, navigate to https://montana.instructure.com.
  2. On the Canvas login page, enter NetID@msu.montana.edu and password, click Login, then authenticate with Duo.
  3. Navigate to the appropriate course on the dashboard or under Courses in the global navigation.

  4. In the course navigation, click Modules.Canvas Modules
  5. In the header of the module you wish to add a Panopto recording to, select the + button or click + Module at the top to create a new one.Content add and plus module highlighted

Once you have decided which module you would like to add your video to, you have two options on how to embed the video.

Option 1: Embed with External Tool

  1. In the Add window, choose External Tool from the dropdown menu. Then, select Panopto from the list.

  2. The Panopto content window will display. If you are having trouble finding the video you are looking for, click on the folder dropdown menu at the top of the Panopto content window and select Everything. You can then find your recording using the search bar next to the folder dropdown menu. Once you find the video you want to embed, click Insert.

  3. Once you click Insert, scroll to the bottom of the Add Item window. You can edit the name that will be displayed in your module here. Once finished, click Add Item to populate the video into the module.

Option 2: Create a Page

If you have trouble with embedding a video through the external tool, you can create a page to host your video. 

  1. In the Add window, choose Page from the dropdown menu. Then, select Create Page and name the page below. Finally, click Add Item to insert it in your module. It will populate at the bottom of the selected module. Click the title of your new page to edit it.

  2. Click Edit at the top of your page, and then click on the Panopto icon in the menu of the rich content editor.

  3. The Panopto content window will display your newest recordings at the top. If you are having trouble finding the video you are looking for, click on the folder dropdown menu at the top of the Panopto content window and select Everything. You can find your recording using the search bar next to the folder dropdown menu.

  4. Select the appropriate Panopto recording and click Insert. Finally, save your Canvas page.
