In D2L, email communication was sent directly to external email addresses and functioned like a traditional email system, allowing users to manage messages outside of the LMS. In contrast, Canvas uses the Inbox, an internal messaging tool linked to your courses. Messages remain within the LMS but can send notifications to external email addresses if your notification settings allow it. No setup is required on your end.

What is the Inbox?

The Inbox is a messaging tool used to communicate with a course, a group, an individual student, or a group of students. You can use the Inbox to communicate with others in your course.

Notes:

  • Depending on a user’s notification settings, they may receive an email notification at their @montana.edu address when someone sends them a message through the Canvas Inbox. These notifications often include the message content and allow users to reply directly from their email.

However, even if a user doesn't receive email notifications, all messages sent through the Inbox remain accessible within Canvas and can be read and replied to there.

  • Once a course has concluded and its term date has passed, you can no longer message users in that course.
